M.I.A.

Postby *Rick* » 27 Mar 2013, 04:55

I tryed to see if there was already a topic about M.I.A.
but probably most of you barely noticed her in Madonna's "Gimme All your lovin" (feat Nicky Minaji)
so maybe it's time to give her a chance because I think she's another talented artist.

Here some info from wikipedia:

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (Tamil: மாதங்கி 'மாயா' அருள்பிரகாசம், Mātaṅki 'Māyā' Aruḷpirakācam ?; born 17 July 1975),
better known by her stage name M.I.A., is a British recording artist, songwriter, painter and director of Tamil decent.
The moniker "M.I.A." is both a play on her own name and a reference to the abbreviation for Missing in Action.
By 2001, Maya designed the cover for Elastica's last single "The Bitch Don't Work", and went on the road with the band to video document their tour.
The tour's supporting act, electroclash artist Peaches, introduced Maya to the Roland MC-505 and encouraged Maya to make music,
a medium in which Maya lacked confidence.
While vacationing together in Bequia in the Caribbean, Maya began experimenting with Frischmann's MC-505.
She adopted her stage name, "M.I.A.", standing for "Missing In Acton" during this time.
In her 2012 book Maya writes, "M.I.A. came to be because of my missing cousin.
I wanted to make a film about where he was since he was M.I.A. (MIssing in Action) in Sri Lanka.
Her compositions combine elements of electronic, dance, alternative, hip hop and world music.
M.I.A. began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker and designer in West London before beginning her recording career in 2002.
Since rising to prominence in early 2004 for her singles "Sunshowers" and "Galang", charting in the UK and Canada and reaching number eleven on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales in the US, she has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards and the Mercury Prize.
She released her debut album Arular in 2005 and second album Kala in 2007 both to universal critical acclaim.
M.I.A.'s third album Maya was released in 2010 soon after the controversial song-film short "Born Free".
Her fourth studio album, Matangi, has been recorded across the world with different collaborators, and is due for release on Mercury Records in 2013.

You mean the video or the song?

I liked both. The video is hard to watch in a way but it's a representation of what is happening nowadays in the society.
What unsettled me is "Gimme all your loving" and the whole collaborating with Madonna
but I perfectly understand that she have made it for money and exposure.

In this mixtape you can listen (at 5:06 min) a new track from the forthcoming album Matangi.

M.I.A is amazing, loved her since Galang. been lucky enough to meet several times and was on stage with just her in Austin, which is now part of their routine footage of past ACL shows. Apparently they show M.I.A. & me on stage for the 2009 segment every year throughout the festival's weekend run.

Politically correctness is killing us,
we do not even recognize who are our enemies because we're too busy to analize superficially what we see.

I find way more offensive the fact that these things are still happening in the world, in the name of god or/and/but moved by economical reasons.
And I find more alarming the way the music industry is selling sex and dark images to kids
(I mean what's the use of such a dark video for a love song like "Diamonds" of Rihanna for example)

The new album Matangi is out,.
It's not bad but for those who already know her from a while maybe is not so exciting as it sounds like the old ones, well actually have a renewed sound but the way the songs are structured is not far different.

I love M.I.A. but I think her work with Madonna is the worst thing she's ever done. well MDNA is Madonna's worst album, but I can see why M.I.A. would work with Madonna. M.I.A. would have been a dream collaborator back in the American Life or Erotica days.

I'm seeing M.I.A. this sunday, should be fun. :) I love her music.

M.i.a. is back with a video that brought up many controversies on the web.
"Borders" is taken from the upcoming album "Matahdatah".

In the beginning I was honestly a bit unsettled and unsure about how to deal with it.
Sometimes she gives me hard times with silly tweets and her unclear position, yes she's a refugee herself although in a highly privileged position nowadays but in the end I think it's good that somebody in the mainstream is there to raise questions about our society and the way we deal with certain issues.

Here you can watch the video for "Borders":

I'm still split and don't know what to think about this woman.
First she goes against globalization and then she make a song for H&M?

It was a good cause but it come from one of the biggest money machine who has been accused to exploit its employees several times...

btw she's back today with a new single "Go Off"
